THE SWIM

The course is divided into two zones and each will be manned by a separate safety team comprising of at least two motorised safety craft. There are a number of static sighting yachts anchored on the course to aid with navigation. A hydration boat will also be placed at the Bell Buoy.

PRIZES AND GIVE-AWAYS

This is arguably one of the most generous open water races in South Africa when considering prize money. Cash prizes go to all category winners and medals are presented to all finishers.

WATER QUALITY

This is a long ocean swim so tides, currents and wind can all play a role. Dolphins are also a factor.

LAYOUT

Essentially the race is an out-and-back affair. The route has been divided into two zones; Hobie Beach to Pollok Beach, a 1,600 metre stretch along the beachfront and the Pollok Beach to Bell Buoy zone. This 2,400 metre swim takes you away from the beach and onward to the famous buoy.

FACILITES

Hobie Beach is a safe and secure Blue Flag beach with very calm surf. Professional water safety officers are appointed for this event.

EDITORS NOTES

When Lt. William McPherson Rice charted a submerged reef approximately one-and-a-half nautical miles off shore in 1797 he was not thinking of an open water swim. This rock was a peril to many a ship and in 1838 a lit marker buoy was anchored over the reef. Today an East Cardinal marker buoy warns ships to pass on the eastern side. At night a flashing light marks the location of the reef. There is a bell on this buoy to warn ships when fog rolls into Algoa Bay, hence the name Bell Buoy. Algoa Bay is a potential World Heritage Site and is rich in both terrestrial and marine biodiversity.

The area is listed in the top four richest areas in the world in terms of biodiversity and is one of the unique dive sites in the world. The Bell Buoy crossing was first swum by Eastern Cape solo swimmer Kyle Main in 2009 and this marked the start of an event that captured the imagination of both local and international swimmers. The inaugural event took place in 2010 and in 2018 the race celebrates its ninth anniversary.

EDITORS NOTES

The race has high safety standards and as such the organisers may cancel or postpone the swim if water conditions become unsafe. A cut-off time of 01:45 at the halfway mark is observed and swimmers who do not make this shall be disqualified and removed from the water. You are encouraged to have your own water safety craft. If using a surf ski paddler, your support must be competent over 10 kilometres in open seas. There are no separate categories and Channel Rules do not apply. You are therefore encouraged to wear a wetsuit.
